About

I'm Fred Houweling — an engineer, developer, and maker based in Australia. This site has been my online home in one form or another since around 1998, starting as a personal homepage and growing into a collection of projects, notes, and experiments.

Over the years it has hosted everything from PIC microcontroller code and PHP web apps to a local MediaWiki, a reference manager, weather feeds, and more than one abandoned side project. The old site has now been archived and replaced with this simpler, faster, more secure version.

Current focus areas

  • Software: C/C++, C#, PHP, SQL, Python, Linux tooling.
  • Embedded & electronics: Microcontrollers, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, sensors, home-built interfaces.
  • Data & automation: MQTT, weather logging, home automation, dashboards, and anything that can be graphed.
  • Making: 3D printing, makerspaces, workshop projects, and the occasional renovation challenge.

About this site

The site is intentionally minimal: PHP includes, a single responsive CSS file, no tracking, no heavy frameworks, and no spam-friendly contact forms. It is deployed from an SVN working copy with a simple timestamped-backup publish script.
